You do want to have some nofollow links pointing to your website. Some SEO experts believe that they carry some direct SEO weight. Regardless, we believe that they carry a lot of indirect SEO value because of the targeted traffic and residual SEO signals that you get from nofollow links, particularly from high-authority, relevant websites.
Two of our favorite tools for competitor analysis are Ahrefs.com and SEMRush.com. Using these will enable you to step into the domain of your competitors so that you can access detailed profiles and data about their strategies. Then you can glean insight from them and use the information to strengthen your own content and backlinking strategies.
How to Monitor Backlinks
If backlinks are so important to your rankings, how do you monitor them? As we explained earlier, Google Search Console has solved that problem for you. It is free to use and will provide you with all of the links that point to your website. Access to this information is incredibly valuable.
However, Google Search Console is not as fast at detecting new links as some other commercial tools. And the Search Console will not necessarily give you data or insight on other factors, like how many social signals were received from the page that hosts your backlink, if a backlink is standard or nofollow, or what the domain authority of the referring website might be.
